Especially because it stuck out as a particularly enjoyable bonus of reading the novelisation, I was a bit confused when Wood and Miles, with no reference to the book, mentioned the scene when ‘coven leader de Vries […] has his twittering acolyte suggest that they drive away. His line – ‘Plymouth? For Heaven’s Sake , Martha!’ – became the title of a fanzine, and the core of a scene from The League of Gentlemen’ (Lawrence Miles & Tat Wood, About Time 4; p.237).
Eventually, I found this: ‘This story was released on VHS on 1 May 1995. This release contained an extended cut of episode two, which featured a longer exchange between de Vries and his mistress before they were attacked by the Ogri’ (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stones_of_Blood).
Now, what this should have led to is me hunting the internet to find out what other little extras got included into episodes on the VHS releases and maybe coming up with a cod theory about where they did or didn't do this. Instead, it reminded how I saw an awful lot of Doctor Who for the first time thanks to a friend of my Dad's setting their video recorder for, I think, Sunday mornings and passing us on a load of omnibuses.
It then led to a desperate hunt for any evidence of the fanzine Wood and Miles mention. I found this - https://plymouthwhoproduct.wixsite.com/pwp2014/contact - but I don't think that's it. All I discovered was the one other person who's ever encountered the same confusion - Xenius Jones: http://citizenoftheuniverse.blogspot.com/2007/04/another-mystery.html - and this amazing site: https://pinkforyouractualpterodactyl.com/2020/05/30/the-chairs-of-doctor-who-season-16-17.
Anyway, Doctor Who and the Stones of Blood...
