...NOW WITH ADDED JO MARTIN...
Not really novelisations-related (as in not at all), but I found myself wondering who had played the Doctor the other day and was surprised to discover that a complete list is quite hard to come by. tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Doubles_for_the_Doctor seems quite incomplete; guide.doctorwhonews.net/roles.php?code=D&type=cast is excellent, largely cribbed off the DWM Specials whilst being wonderfully searchable, but doesn't do a lot of images; movie-dude.co.uk/[TV]%20'Doctor%20Who'.htm does, but barely makes it out of the 1960s.
So I thought I'd have a go myself. I've decided to skip parodies and pastiches (except for The Curse of Fatal Death, since it was so high profile), fan productions (though Nick Briggs sneaks in by other means) and vocal performances in non-full cast audio productions (otherwise pretty much all the 60s companions would be in for a start). I strongly suspect it's still incomplete, especially with regards to the Doctor inhabiting other bodies in Big Finish stories and doubles for Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whitaker, but it still feels closer to what I was looking for that anything I could find already online.
All of which means that if you do want to see all the people who've played the Doctor (I make it 128 so far - 92 in the TV series itself), click on the picture of the joint longest-serving Doctor (Terry Walsh, 1970-9) to the right and you'll never be caught short in a pub quiz ever again...
UPDATE: At my latest count, we're up to 130 (counting Richard E Grant just the once), with 36 of those coming from outside the TV series (including, though I find it a tight call, Daniel Anthony in 'Death of the Doctor').
If you know of anyone I've missed out, or know that one of the images is not of the person it's supposed to be, please, please, please get in touch.
